  147. DETAILED PRODUCT DESCRIPTION:
  148.  
  149. The HP 27289A Router is a 2 port (1 Ethernet/802.3, 1 Synchronous
  150. Port), high-performance, multiprotocol router and bridge.  The
  151. hardware and hardware-specific firmware is developed by HP Roseville.
  152. Processing is handled by a Motorola 68020 running at 16MHZ.  The
  153. Ethernet LAN (Sonic) and WAN (SGS-Thompson MK5025) interface chips are
  154. the same as those used in the HP 28674A Remote Bridge.  It is packaged
  155. in an SCP (single communications processor) enclosure similar to the
  156. latest ICF bridge and hub product packaging.  Additionally, 3MB of on
  157. board DRAM is available as buffer space; 1.5MB of Flash EEPROM stores
  158. the routing and bridging firmward.  Flash EEPROM technology allows
  159. update/upgrade of this firmware via the console port or network
  160. interfaces, without physical access to the router pc assemblies.

  162. Functionally the HP 27289A Router is equivalent to other HP Routers in
  163. terms of routing and bridging capabilities, it is a non-scaleable,
  164. low-end addition to the ICF router product family. It can
  165. transparently connect several local or geographically dispersed
  166. networks forming a "internetwork" or network of networks. The ability
  167. to operate concurrently as a router and a spanning tree bridge allows
  168. the HP Router to support multivendor networks that use a variety of
  169. protocols and media.
  170.  
  171. Most of the firmware is a technology transfer from Wellfleet
  172. Communications, Inc. and is functionally equivalent to the software
  173. products available for other HP Routers, ie. it supports the same
  174. routing, bridging and management functions.

  176. The HP Router products support the following WAN interfaces:

  183.     - Internet Protocol (IP) (Supports NS and ARPA Services)

  192.       is a bridging function rather than routing protocol but is

  196. The HP OpenView Interconect Manager 300/400 (27630A) and Interconect
  197. Manager 600/800 (27631A) provide TCP/IP network management
  198. functionality on HP 9000 systems for managing all HP Routers.
  199. Currently available, they include the capability to manage non-IP
  200. protocols (eg.  DECnet, IPX, AppleTalk, etc.) and a graphic
  201. configuration editor.

  203. The HP Router can route and bridge packets concurrently and provide
  204. internetworking among multi-vendor, multi-protocol Local Area Networks
  205. (LANs). Both LAN to LAN and LAN to Wide Area Network (WAN)
  206. communication are provided within a single system.  Standard protocols
  207. like TCP/IP, DECnet, and X.25 are routed while other protocols, eg. HP
  208. DTC 1.0 and DEC LAT, are bridged.

  210. The HP Router will first try to route a packet if it supports the
  211. packet's network layer protocol, (IP, XNS, DECnet, etc.).  If it does
  212. not support the packet's network layer protocol, then the packets will
  213. be bridged.  The ability to route as well as bridge packets gives the
  214. versatility to the HP Routers to support networks with varied
  215. protocols.

  217. For routing, The HP Router operates at the network layer and selects
  218. one of potentially many paths to forward a packet based on a variety
  219. of parameters including delay, hop count, cost and link congestion.
  220. The ability to accommodate meshed topologies and to support redundant
  221. links makes it very suitable for large LAN/WAN networks.  The HP
  222. Router provides subnet isolation to clearly delineate administrative
  223. boundaries.  This allows network managers to localize problems and
  224. easily administer large, heavily used networks.
